Italian Lotteries

National lotteries have been operating in Italy under private management since 1932. Traditional lotteries, scratch tickets and online lotteries are available.

Lottomatica S.p.A. operates the Lotto Game through a government concession. The concession was awarded in 2003 to the Consorzio Lotterie Nationali, of which Lottomatica is the main shareholder. It is one of the biggest lottery operators in the world, with around 248,000 terminals and over 109,000 outlets. Lottomatica also offers online gambling, including poker, and operates race and sports betting outlets. Since the passage of the VLT legislation, the company plans to roll out a large number of machines through its subsidiaries.

In August 2006, Lottomatica purchased GTECH Holdings, and the corporation now provides lottery services internationally in addition to the Italian National Lottery.
